●どこにいても会社と連絡が取れるのは確かに便利だが, 一方で, 一時も息が抜けなくなるという困ったことになる. While it is true that it is convenient to be in contact with the company wherever one is, (on the other hand) it's annoying not to be able to slip away for even a moment.

・彼は学生のレポートの欠点を厳しく指摘する一方で, よいところをほめるのも忘れない. While he is very strict about pointing out mistakes in students' reports, he doesn't forget to compliment their good points.

5 〔…ばかり〕 only; just; simply.

●今のところ, わがチームは防戦一方だ. Right now our team is concentrating on defending.

・人口は増える一方だ. The population just keeps on growing.

・病人は悪くなる一方です. The invalid is getting worse and worse.

●彼は食う一方の男だ. He is simply a glutton.

6 〔話しかわって〕 in the meantime; meanwhile; on the other hand.

●一方私はといえば as for me.

●一方, それとは知らずに彼は駅で彼女を待ち続けた. In the meanwhile, unaware of this he continued waiting for her at the station.

・母親は息子を大学に進学させようと必死になっていた. 一方息子はといえば, 学校にも行かず遊び回っていた. The mother was desperately hoping to get her son into a university. The son for his part was skipping school and playing around.

いっぽう【一法】

one way; one method.

●子供の気持ちを知るために絵を書かせてみるというのも一法だ. One way of learning how children feel is to have them draw pictures.

・このような事件を防ぐための一法として, 毎日生徒たちの持ち物検査をするということも考えられる. One way of preventing this kind of incident would be to inspect students' belongings every day.

いっぽう【一報】

information; a report.

～する 〔知らせる〕 inform sb of sth; give sb notice 《that…》; let sb know 《that…》.

●現地に到着したら, まず会社の上司に一報する手はずになっていた. It has been arranged that as soon as he arrives overseas he is to notify his superior back at his company.

●ちょうどその時に大統領暗殺の一報が入った. It was just then that word came that the President had been assassinated.

・和平交渉決裂の一報が流れると, 一気にドルが値下がりした. As soon as reports went around that the peace negotiations had broken off, the value of the dollar plunged.

●事件解決の一報を聞いて, 全員が胸をなでおろした. Upon hearing a report that the incident had been resolved, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

・火災発生の一報を受けると消防隊は直ちに現場に向かった. Receiving a report that a fire had broken out, firefighters immediately proceeded to the scene of the fire.

●ご一報くだされば, すぐに店の者が伺います. If you will contact us, we will immediately send some from our shop.

・ご上京の節はご一報願います. When you come to Tokyo, please contact me.

第一報 an initial [early] report.

●子供からの通報がその大事故の第一報だった. The report from the children was the first we heard about the big [serious] accident.

・放送局は番組を中断して容疑者逮捕の第一報を伝えた. The broadcasting station interrupted the program to make the initial announcement that the suspect had been arrested.
