・母親は息子を大学に進学させようと必死になっていた. 一方息子はといえば, 学校にも行かず遊び回っていた. The mother was desperately hoping to get her son into a university. The son for his part was skipping school and playing around.

いっぽう【一報】information; a report.~する 〔知らせる〕 inform sb of sth; give sb notice 《that…》; let sb know 《that…》.●現地に到着したら, まず会社の上司に一報する手はずになっていた. It has been arranged that as soon as he arrives overseas he is to notify his superior back at his company.
●ちょうどその時に大統領暗殺の一報が入った. It was just then that word came that the President had been assassinated.
